Assignment 3 - Excluding furniture, survey all your material possessions. Create an open space in your home studio. Put all your possessions in one pile in the designated space. ALL Your Possessions! In One Pile! Title your pile. Document your work, post to the class blog, and write three or more sentences about why you gave your pile the title you did and what the experience of making everything you own, one thing - a pile. Did some of your possessions lose meaning or association by going through this exercise? What else happened?
Now, working from the pile, deconstruct it to make as many pillars as possible reaching from the floor to the ceiling or as high as safely possible. Stack your possessions on top of each other one by one. See if you can reach the ceiling. If you have to stand on a chair to do so, please be careful. Consider the shape and forms of each of your objects that will make them fit well technically in the pillar. Where’s the best spot to place each object? Again, title and document each pillar, and write why you choose those titles. In three or more sentences, describe any feelings or previous association you had with each of your possessions as you changed their inherent value by doing something different with them beyond their original purpose. Did you become acquainted with some possessions that you had forgotten about? Through reinterpretation, did your objects gain or lose value? Which ones? How so?
